“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” – James 4:14

I attended a funeral this past January for a woman that I did not know well, but her husband was a beloved professor of mine. The room was full of worship music and prayers, just like any other Christian funeral would be, but there were a couple things about this one that made it special – (1) we called the entire service a “homegoing celebration,” and (2) it was ALL about Jesus.

Several of this woman’s friends from around the world shared their stories describing the countless ways she had impacted their lives. They all emphasized that this was not because of her works alone, but that God had used her as a vessel to reach them, because Jesus is all that matters.

One missionary illustrated that the footprints she left behind here on earth led, and will continue to lead, others to the Cross. Since she lived a life so selflessly for Jesus, others are now able to fix their eyes on Him, will continue to do so, and can now look forward to spending eternity in heaven, because Jesus is all that matters.

Another speaker’s story really wedged itself into my heart. She explained that throughout the hospital visits, treatments, and long conversations, this woman constantly expressed how excited she was to see Jesus, and that she was going HOME, because Jesus is all that matters.

This brought up a question I needed to ask myself – when I get to heaven, will I be more excited to see Jesus or to see the other people I know are up there?

Pretty convicting, don’t you think? We hear all these stories about heaven that make it seem like a fantasy world, so we usually end up relying merely on the tangible things here on earth to satisfy us. But what if we lived differently? What if we relied on our God to satisfy us?

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

If only I could live like this woman, to focus solely on God and His kingdom, not on the worldly kingdom I’ve built up for myself. Our life here on earth is so frivolous – like a mist that vanishes – compared to the eternal life Jesus has prepared for us. We have not yet made it to our true home!
